Hey, EE Scott does some writing and helps out with Boost House. Find her on Twitter or don’t.
Do you consider yourself a ‘writer’?
ugh, this question is not a fun time for me hehe. i mean, okay so yeah i’m a ‘writer’ or something like that, i sometimes write creative things and more often write boring ass non-creative things. more often than writing i am reading or editing or working as a volunteer receptionist at an acupuncture clinic where i like to watch people dream with needles in them, or i am working some sort of food service industry job where i tend to do well for myself as i am good at appealing to middle class white people and convincing them to give me their money (this is a very handy skill i have!). i would i say i probably identify more as a do-er of these various things than i do as a ‘writer,’ but idk, identity is a hard thing, mostly i think i would prefer to not identify as anything at all?
Do you consider yourself a ‘reader’? like do you read a lot of books?
yes, i read a lot. i have a problem where i check out way too many books from libraries, i get excited by all the possibilities! reading is a top 5 favorite activity of mine, i do it every single day. recently i read some short stories by simon von booy, a book of essays by hilton als, a handful of poetry collections that steve brought home published by metatron, an important and educational pamphlet by anne boyer, and a graphic novel by laura knetzger.
You’re in arizona, right? How’s that going?
yes, i am living in tucson currently with the rest of boost house. living in the desert has been a strange and fun experience so far and i am glad i am doing it. i think i have seasonal affective disorder, but for the summer here. the heat is overwhelming and sometimes it makes me not want to leave my room for days at a time, but cooler weather is on the way so i am feeling more hopeful lately. arizona has been good to me overall though, been doing a lot of ‘personal growth’ here and i also i met someone and fell in love which has been really wonderful and unexpected.
I really like this piece by you in the Shabby DollHouse Reader…http://shabbydollhouse.com/Every-Day-I-Am-Trying. What was the ‘inspiration’ for that?
weee thank you! hmm when i wrote that poem it was that chilly, sort of sad and lonely but also weirdly thrilling in-between time of fall and winter and i was living in michigan and eating a lot of weed and seeing my therapist religiously and trying to dig my way out of a really terrible depression. i was writing a lot to process my emotions and to make myself feel more purposeful, which resulted in that poem as well as quite a few others. i’m pretty sure i wrote that poem in the public library in downtown ann arbor, i had slipped hard on a patch of ice while walking the dogs that morning.
Do you submit to many places?
not really, and i feel a lot of guilt about this. like, i know i should probably be trying harder to get my work ‘out there,’ but most of the time i am just too busy with life and boost house and spending time with all of the people that are dear to me hehe.
I guess most ppl would know you from boost house, I think? Why did you decide to give boost house a try?
i had already had been toying with similar ideas of starting a small press when steve announced that he was starting boost house, so the timing was right, and we had met a year earlier, got along well, and seemed to have similar visions for the type of work we wanted to publish, so it just sort of seemed like a natural fit to me. it’s been over a year and half since we’ve been working together and it still feels like a good thing in my life.
What boost house ‘projects’ are you most excited about right now?
ahhhhhh i just read the contributor list for MACRO and i am very very stoked to be publishing it! also, currently ridiculously excited for ‘the best thing ever’ by laura theobald, which we will be releasing later this month. laura’s work is very funny but also at times heartfelt and sad, and the voice that this collection is written in is very bizarre and interesting. i can’t wait to share her work with more people !!
