Hey, about a month or two ago someone at Publishizer asked me to consider doing a campaign for a book called How To Fail At Writing.
But I don’t have a book on How To Fail At Writing, I just have a lot of experience at failing.
Well, I decided to give it a shot anyway (if it makes a good story, do it!) and it may even prove my point (so meta) if it fails.
And I did a few posts on Medium talking about the process.
Hey! Here are some book marketing ideas I just came up with. What do you think? These aren’t guaranteed to work…
- Optimize (or hope) for search engine traffic on relevant key terms (or something)
- Create Facebook ads for your niche
- Sponsor a “cool” podcast
- Do a PR stunt
- Send out a press release and put them in random press release places
- Create your own “escape game” where you lure 100 friends to your house, then lock them in with no food or water until they finish your book (see #4).
- Do #4 or #6 and get on the front of Reddit
- Ask every social media person you know to heart, like and retweet you
- Create a video promo and then share the video
- Take #1 and look up blogs via BuzzSumo or Twitter with your relevant key terms and then send them your press release
- Create a limited edition poster and send those out with the book orders
- Ask people to create their own art or image macros based on a quote from the book
- Ask people to create their own art or images based on a quote from the book, then give out free copies of the book if they get a certain number of likes
- Create a list of website editors and message them with a discount to the book
- Message all of your Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Snapchat followers with a link to the first chapter
- Tell all of your loyal, awesome email subscribers about the book
- Ask all of my loyal, awesome email subscribers to review the book on Amazon
- Ask website editors from #14 if they’d like to do an interview with you about the book
- Make it a self-interview so it goes faster
- Cold email 50 bloggers in your niche
- Write a really good email
- If an interview happens, “ladder up” the interview via the strategies of Ryan Holiday’s Trust Me I’m Lying
- Send a cold email to Ryan Holiday to try to get mentioned in his Recommended Reading list (Haven’t done this yet)
- Run a Goodreads giveaway
- Give free ebook copoies to other bloggers and ask them to run a giveaway
- Host a local reading
- Tell local media that you’re having a reading for the book, because local media like events more than books
- At your local reading, don’t actually do a reading and do a scavenger hunt for copies of your book instead
- Convince people to let you guest blog on different topics in the book
- Leave a free ebook download code on a postcard at your favorite random places and then write a review on Yelp or TripAdvisor about where you put the code
- Put a special download code for an ebook in each printed edition
- Paypal $1 to everyone who reviews the book (good or bad) up to 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 people
- Make postcards
- Send postcards to minor and/or major celebrities
- Take pictures of the cards addressed to the celebrities, post those to Medium and/or Tumblr and hope for hearts
- As a thank you, send gift cards to 25 people (in #12 or #13?) who have bought the book after they email you the receipt
- Ask your local library system to order a bunch of copies
- Create a free ebook of funny/inspirational quotes from the book
- Make the free ebook of funny/inspirational quotes available on Amazon as an ‘enticement’ to buy the full book
- Solicit blurbs from people, even if you do not know who the people are or know if they actually read the book
- Tweet to everyone that mentions a topic in your book
- In your Medium post about your book, @ people by name to see if they happen to look at it (Don’t do this, this is annoying…but what if it works? I’ll ask @todd brison and @jonasellison and @jeffgoins what they think.)
- Make a list of all relevant podcasts, solicit being on their show and hope that the books sell, like in this article
- Convince fellow authors that write similarly to you and are in the same circles as you that this book is “good” so that they share it with their audiences (PS: make your book good)
- Write a blog post about how to market the book, include a link at the end of the blog post about the book and that pre-orders start on August 1
I’m reading The Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth by James Altucher and he had this incredibly simple idea. It goes like this:
- Get a piece of paper.
- Write “That’s crazy” in a big circle, right in the middle.
- Then map out the craziest ideas you have for your life from the middle.
- Have fun.
Here’s mine. (I like to write stuff out by hand):
It’s ok to be passionate about something without making it into your work
Passion seems like the great misnomer of our age.
Instagram tells us to pursue it all the time. It’s not enough to like something anymore, we have to be passionate about it. Like willing to die for it or something. (I can count on one hand what I’m willing to die for. And none of them have anything to do with how well or not I write…).

Even our birthday greetings have veered from pre-fab physical cards in the mail to pre-fab emails to pre-fab Facebook thumbs.
I want to write you a letter.
I will put pen to paper, put the paper in an envelope, place a stamp on it and send it to you.
Why am I doing this?
