Seems like in “The Hobbit” and in some other books, J.R.R. used the word “gnomes” but then later changed it to High Elves. Why? He didn’t like the silent “g”? Not scary enough? Too kind? Too scared of the immense-unknowable branding opportunity? Freaked out by humble gardeners with bad decorating sense?
What about other regrets–
You may have heard that JK regrets having her characters hook up in one of the Harry Potter books (I wouldn’t know because I’ve never read the books or seen the movies).
I also liked the fact that the “Anarchist Cookbook” author became a Christian.
If you didn’t click to it before, the piece really is worth a look.
