Is this actually a problem?
Are the hyped books the ones that actually don’t get read?
This is probably true in that I’m not reading about a lot of crime series or murder mysteries in my space, which is to basically say the mainstream media. I’m not trolling the random blogs for those, but I do have my own niche of books that I like, mainly with small presses and independent lit.
I recently read about this conundrum in a piece about TV, how the shows people write about (i.e. the “prestige” shows) are the ones that are consumed the least. And that there aren’t as many episode recaps of say, The Big Bang Theory at least not in the “news-ier” presses.
Books seem even more bifurcated. It’s hard for a book to pull in a solid audience, and it’s usually only covered by the news-ier outlets once it’s broken big. Literary fiction tries to break into this (New York Review of Books, etc), but there are tons more blogs that are covering the mystery, romance, sci-fi and independent stuff.
We’ve mostly found our reading communities on our own, without the big guys pointing us in a certain way.
