Agree or Disagree?
Agree on both.
The “I” thing is a normal construct that we can’t escape from in the “iGeneration” or whatever. It works a lot of the time and often “I” is a good place to start. That said, as with anything with yourself, you’ve got to move on. Broaden the possibilities even if that means eventually returning to “I”. It’s amazing how many things are happening outside of yourself.
Aiming for The Paris Review seems ridiculous, like something everyone born in the 1940s or 1950s desired, now the only part of The Paris Review I’d sincerely like to be would be the “Art of Fiction” section,t hat stuff is weighty and amazing. Aim for that if anything, but it’s basically like a lifetime achievement award.
Noah Cicero is a writer I deeply respect though I don’t always like. Sometimes his stuff is too political for me, but his output is amazing and he brings up a lot of good ideas, even I don’t think they quite fit into a narrative. My favorite book of his and the one I enjoyed the most (I read it very quickly) is Best Behavior. I just purchased “Go To Work…” a few days ago, so I haven’t finished it yet. I’m not sure where he is on the Internet right now, but this is a collection of his previous blog posts. And The Collected Works of Noah Cicero is an amazingly good deal.
