I only like to use one kind of writing prompt.
Yeah, I’ve used a variety of prompts with students to talk about journal entries, but not really as a creative exercise.
My writing prompts are more “unofficial”: I read an interesting article, I meet an unusual person, I attend a crazy event, I have a memorable conversation.
Then I write about it. Those are the real writing prompts.
There’s also another, better, but sort of draining writing prompt–the kind where you have a boss or you work for a company and they’re like, “write this and make it sound better and here are the goals/objectives/benefits we’re trying to get across.”
Yes, I’ll take your prompt for a paycheck. That’s the only thing writing prompts are good for once you have your career going–money.
What about you? Do you use writing prompts?
